Principal's Message

We opened the doors of Urbana Middle School in August 2006, and everyone agrees that the building, perched thirty feet above a creek bed, bordering acres of trees, covered with tall windows to take in the beauty of the landscape, is a magnificent looking building. The classrooms are filled with various pieces of the latest technology to engage students in learning and to prepare them for the 21st century. However, what makes Urbana Middle so special is not the building or the equipment in it; it is the people: the dedicated, child-centered professional and support staff, the committed student learners, and the enthusiastic and supportive parents and community members. At Urbana Middle School we are all working together to Soar to Excellence!

UMS Pride
2007 Accomplishments
MATHCOUNTS Competition:
	--Top public school in Frederick County --12th in State – out of 105 schools (only 4 points from 3rd place)

Maryland Mathematics League
	--1st in Frederick County --2nd in Region 2, which includes schools from Anne Arundel, Charles, Frederick, Howard, Prince Georges, Talbot and Worcester counties. --8th place in Maryland, which includes schools from Washington, D.C. --Top 7th percent of nation

PBIS
	UMS was awarded the Maryland PBIS Green Ribbon in only its first year of implementation. Our evaluation score actually qualified us for a higher award, but, as a first year school, we did not have any trend discipline data.

Attendance
	Achieved state-level Excellence mark for school-wide attendance of 96.1% for entire year. We were the only middle school in FCPS to achieve this honor.

Orchestra
	UMS Orchestra earned Superior scores (the highest possible) at county and state level adjudication.

Character Counts
	Students contributed over $4,800 in change to support area families during the holidays. Over eighty students and staff members raised over $13,000 during their participation in the Frederick Relay for Life.
